In Feburary 2011 I underwent surgery to have breast tumors removed, which was one of the most terrifying experiences of my life. Throughout the whole process I found it difficult to cope with all of the stress and fear that I was feeling, so I channeled those emotions into creating a piece of work to document the event. This series of twenty-one etchings is the most intimate self-portrait I have ever created.

These prints are a series of lithos that I created last semester, they are all three layers, measuring 11x14, editions of 15. These works are very meaningful to me not only because of the emotion behind the work but also because this is the first time I have truly worked with abstraction and color.

My friend Amy Wilson who I did the DCF with just did a really great public art piece that was displayed at West Thames Park. Since it has been taken down she has cut up the large vinyl pieces and turned them into tote bags! These bags are so great because they are each one of a kind and were actually part of the installation. They are on sale HERE and new ones will be put up on Wed. May 19th at 7pm!

So youtube massacred the quality of these videos, the pieces of the animation are really finely done watercolors but they are super blurry so I would recommend watching it in HD which helps a tiny bit. Anyway, these are two stop motion animations I made for the only video class I have ever taken and will ever take.

I have been organizing this event with an amazing person named Amy Wilson that I am really proud of and I think will turn out really well.

"Announcing the Degenerate Craft Fair, a sort of anti-art-fair featuring over 20 artists and designers. Just in time for holiday shopping, it will take place in the first three weekends of December at three different locations, and feature works of art generally priced under $50.

Organized by artists Amy Wilson and Shannon Broder, this event was originally designed to help a group of friends weather the recession together. “Artists have been really devastated by the terrible economy. So we wanted to come up with a way to help ourselves to make a little extra money by selling inexpensive versions of our work – books, prints, multiples, whatever we can come up with,” states Wilson. From that point, the DCF was founded and has now grown to involve a whole variety of artists and objects, including jewelry, stuffed animals, CDs, stickers, clothing, zines, and even square inches of Detroit, MI.

Yesterday was the opening of the VCS exhibit Outpost, it went really well there was a great turn out and we received a lot of positive press including a write up in amNY and Business Week. The concept behind the exhibit was question the value of artwork, what would you trade for your piece of artwork? Artwork was hung next to little bags with the artists name on them and visitors were encouraged to fill out a form and offer a trade for the piece of artwork, it could be anything from a loaf of homemade pumpkin bread to an unlimited metro card. So much work went into this space and it truly was a success.

Last week I also printed 200 greeting cards. It took me 8 solid hours in the printshop and a really sore back. I printed using the drawings I had used for my door tags and added a second solid layer of color behind the drawings. These are two of the sculptures I have done this past semester. The first one is made of chicken wire, plaster, paper, and thread. The second one is a proportionally correct 6ft tall giraffe made out of wood, nails, and glue.

Visual and Critical Studies recently had its first solo show "Transitions" in the Visual Arts Gallery at 601 West 26th Street. The gallery space was beautiful and the turnout was incredible. I exhibited two pieces, a photographic diptych and an embroidery typeface done on canvas.

This semester in graphic design we were given an assignment to take over 50 photos of ourselves in different poses and wearing different clothing. We then had to rip up all the image, create a new image, blow it up life size and create a cut-out, then take that cut-out around the city and photograph it.

I recently had three watercolors, five graphite drawings and a photograph featured in "Prime Time" exhibit at my school. The exhibition was displayed in a gallery at 315 W 21st street and featured the artwork of many students from the Visual and Critical Studies Program as well as Fine Arts. This was the first time Visual and Critical Studies has ever exhibited student artwork and I was very proud to be able to participate.

The past few nights there have been some insanely intense thunder storms. (too many adjectives?) I stood outside with my camera trying to press the shutter when the lightning struck. Unfortunately it was way too cloudy to get a picture of the lightning strike but how the clouds were illuminated was amazing. I also took a video of the thunder and lightning but there is a lot of background noise due to the amount of wind. Got to love summer storms.

So I went to MOCCA festival over the weekend, I originally went to stalk out Danielle Corsetto of Girls With Slingshots but I completely missed her table even though I went through the entire festival three times searching for it. I didn't really buy anything because I have no money, my apartment is tiny, and I currently have over 1,000 books on my shelf already (this is not an exaggeration). I did however run into ZAK SMITH!!!! He was browsing one of the booths and I had to do a double (and triple) take because he was the last person I would have ever thought to be there (seeing as wikipedia says he lives in California). So I basically had a heart attack, walked up to him and said hello, probably sounded like a complete idiot because every intelligent thing I could have said to him left my mind as soon as he started talking. But basically, I met my idol and he was really cool. Still on a cloud!

I drove up to Maopac to see my cousin sing in the band One Frequency. I was hoping this would be a good chance to work more with the digital slr and get some good shots. Unfortunately I wasn't really happy with any of the shots I took. I have photographed bands before and done really well so I'm not sure why I couldn't seem to get any of the shots I wanted but I didn't come up with much. I really just need to keep going places and keep shooting. Anyway here is some of the stuff I came up with.

The show was phenomenal and the bands did a really great job...and then the cops busted the event and arrested two people.

The one photograph I'm kind of happy with is one from the drive home. The cloud formations were amazing.

So before the semester ended and I started thinking about what the hell I was going to do this summer I decided that I would do SOMETHING every week to keep myself sane. I really want to do a lot of art while I am home this summer but being home leaves me completely uninspired. So while I have no idea what kind of art to do I have been doing other things. I have gone to Jersey to visit my roommate and another friend from school, been to my first hardcore show, and re-read The Perks of Being a Wallflower, I have also been to Rockwood to test out the digital slr (Canon Rebel xti) I am working with for the summer. Zak Smith is hands down one of my favorite artists. He graduated from Cooper Union with a BFA and then went on to get his Masters degree at Yale. A lot of Zak's influence comes from the Suicide Girls, from them he has created the series, Girls in the Naked Business and 100 Girls and 100 Octopuses. He has also illustrated each page of Thomas Pynchon's novel Gravity's Rainbow which was featured in the 2004 Whitney Biennial. Zak also performs in porn under the name Zak Sabbath.

More gallery opening adventures! I went to the Zombies Attack Again opening at the MF gallery with a couple of zombie friends.
The gallery was pretty small and very crowded but I wanted to show off some of the work. None of the work was labeled so I have no idea who did it but it was many different styles and interpretations of "zombies". This is not the first time I have noticed a link between zombie culture and art culture. Zombies are pretty freaking awesome.

Evidently Thursday nights are huge for gallery openings. Since I missed the Chelsea gallery tour with Tobi Khan I decided to go opening hopping with my roommate and a friend. The streets of Chelsea really come alive at night and you can automatically tell which gallery's are having openings by the crowds of people by the doors. As previously stated openings aren't really the best times for really taking in the artwork and I actually wasn't a fan of many of the shows we went to but one REALLY stood out.

Tseng Kwong Chi is amazing. His work is being shown at the Paul Kasmin Gallery. The series of self portraits were taken throughout the years 1979-1989. In all of his portraits he is posing in a Mao suit in front of American landmarks. The exhibit features over 90 large scale, black and white photographs. I was just so blown away by his work and the installation in the gallery was really well done.

I went to the Jan De Cock exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art. I liked the exhibit not necessarily because the photographs were strong but because of the installation. There were framed pieces staggered throughout the room at the oddest places so that you really had to look closely to take it all in. The photographs were both color and black and white and in each frame there was either one photograph or many staggered just as the frames themselves were. There were also random plywood sculptural modules sticking out of the walls and a large one on the floor. The installation was interesting because once you walk into the room you are really surrounded by the artwork from all angles. I wouldn't recommend going to the museum just to see the show but if you happen to be in the museum it is pretty interesting to stop by and see.

Yesterday I went to a gallery opening at DCKT gallery for a solo show by Josh Azzarella, my Digital Imaging professor this semester. This was the first time I have been to a gallery opening so it was pretty exciting. I have found that a gallery opening is not really the best time to look and take in the artwork but it is more for drinking and talking about the artwork and the artist. Josh takes historical images and removes important features that ultimately alternate history. Its a really strong show and I highly recommend going to see it.

At 6:45 this morning I was woken up by a text message from an old teacher, mentor, and friend of mine, Toni Quest (see week 4). Her husband, Mark Abrams, who was battling cancer for some time now passed away yesterday. He was an unbelievable husband, artist, and friend who will be greatly missed.

I grew up in Margaretville, a town of only six hundred and fifty people, inside the Catskill Mountain Park. Even though my family has since moved away we still receive the local newspaper The Catskill Mountain News. The headline of the most recent issue was "Margaretville goes to Manhattan" and of course this peaked my interest. It turns out that Parson's, The New School for Design, had rebuilt the town pavilion, and in a town of only six hundred and fifty people, that is a pretty big deal.

Margaretville is built on an ecologically sensitive floodplain of the Delaware River. For years the town has been plagued by terrible floods, recently they have gotten more severe and have been causing more damage. The town pavilion, which has been there for fifty years, has also been damaged in the floods. Since 1998 Parson's Design Workshop has done a non-profit project, and this year rebuilding the Margaretville Pavilion was their project. The project, the workshops largest, and most ambitious to date, was completed by eleven students in only three months. An exhibition featuring the project was held in the Shelia C. Johnson Design Center.

I thought as an exhibition as a whole was really well done. The first thing you see when you enter the gallery is a wall sized photograph of the completed pavilion. On another wall of the gallery there was a week-by-week timeline of what was accomplished throughout the project starting with demolition of the old pavilion in June. In the center of the gallery there was a scale model of the pavilion, complete even with miniature picnic tables. My favorite part of the gallery however was on the last wall there was a video compilation of the day-by-day progress that was completed. This was so touching for me because I have been to the old pavilion and I know the surrounding area so well it just brought back such nostalgia because I have not been back there in so long and I miss it.

Jerry Friedman has been a friend of mine for the past few years. We met somehow on livejournal neither of us really remember how it came about but its most likely because we both have photography in our interests. Jerry graduated from Pratt in 2003 with a BFA in Graphic Design. When I met him he was living in Jersey but has since moved to Texas where he is a senior graphic designer at a company whose main clients are Frido Lay, Pepisco, Cadbury Schwappes, and Quaker/Tropicana/Gatorade. I know him mainly through his photography so that is what I wanted to hi-light I highly recommend you check out his Flickr page.

I was really surprised when I found out how many people I know actually read this blog and since he is one of them I told him I wanted to interview him for the blog. This is what he had to say:

What do you do with your photography, is it just a passion on the side?

"Being that I pretty much sold out my graphic design, I use it as my personal expression. I don't do very much commercial photography (but I do art direct many shoots). I find shooting for myself very fulfilling and I actually also like taking people along with me and teaching them. I'm considering teaching, actually. The output from my shoots I usually post on my flickr page, make prints, and supply to people featured in the shots if they'd like. I feel it's a fantastic trade... they work with me to get a great shot and they can take it home and show their friends : )"

Tell me about some of the events you frequent mermaid parade etc.

"Im a sucker for costumes, admittedly. I do very much like shooting fringe festivals like Mermaid Parade as it brings out many non-standard individuals that bring their diverse talents out in the open. Even though I see many people shooting at parades, I gun for moments that are more exotic than the standard documentary sideline shots that the crowds get. I prefer to work in the parade line at close range, and thankfully the police have never had any issues with me. The same applies to my street photography, I'm not a fan of surveillance. I prefer to work at closer range with shorter lenses so that my shots show the relationship between the subject and I."

For the past three weeks I have been going to Amy Wilson's continuing education figure drawing class. Since I already have drawing from 12-6 on Fridays it was kind of like a 3 hour extension. Making Friday a nine hour draw-a-thon! I really liked going to the classes, for me figure drawing is a way for me to relax and just enjoy myself. The class was also a lot of fun, it was my first time drawing two models at once, and with the lights turned off and the music playing it really just gave the entire class a good vibe. I'm going to miss the class but now that its over hopefully it will have been the kick in the butt I needed to start drawing for myself more often. Week 4

For three years in high school I went to classes six days a week. I was part of the Westchester Art Program which selected three students from different high schools throughout Westchester County and put them in a Saturday art class. For two of those years Toni Quest was my teacher.

Toni Quest is a self taught artist known as the Screaming Woman. After surviving a car crash there was not much else for her to do in her recovery except produce art. To deal with her physical and emotional pain she created the screaming woman series.

Toni Quest is also a published author, her poetry, as well as her award winning cover artwork, can be found in the novel View From the Middle of he Road Vol. II. Toni is so much more than a great artist, she is also a wonderful teacher, mentor, and friend.

I'm a huge comic fan. A nerd if you will. I have been to quite a few conventions *blush* including Ubercon, Connecticon, and MOCCA (Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art) festival (a few times). Most recently I have been reading webcomics (mainly because graphic novels take time to find and read, time which I do not have).

I read a variety of webcomics but these are my top three which I read religiously everyday.

Questionable Content

I have actually met this artist, Jeph Jacques three times, twice at MOCCA Fest and once at Connecticon. If you decide to read his comic you have to start from the beginning because the storyline is great and to watch his art skills progress is insane.

The Devil's Panties

I have also met this artist, Jennie Breeden, three times I have followed her into three different states (mwhahaha) to Ubercon, Connection, and MOCCA Fest. She is a completely insane uber-feminist from Georgia and I own all of her books which she has autographed for me over the years.

Girls With Slingshots

Danielle Corsetto is the only artist out of this bunch that I have not met, but I am working on changing that. I am definitely a huge fan of the comic and all her other artwork.

Week 1

I have never really been good at documenting my life, even as a little girl I could never keep a diary of any sort. This is not to say that I am not good at communicating but when it comes to putting into words things I have done in the past week I find it difficult. This week I went to a live model drawing event. I choose to work in Walnut ink because after a long day of class I didn't want to have to think about what I was drawing I just wanted it to be fluid. I scanned (keep in mind the scanner distorted the color a bit) in four, five-minute drawings from my sketchbook. Enjoy.
